Taking a break

FYI – all, I’m going to take a break from blogging here for a while. I don’t know if this will become something more sporadic or if I’ll get back into regular posting, but wanted to let you all know. Hope you had a great new year and hope to talk soon.

steam end of sale

Happy New Year!

Just a quick note today — Steam’s big PC game sale ends today – in fact, in two and a half hours (approximately 11AM EST). If you play PC games at all, you should check this out for insane prices. Torchlight and Bioshock are each $5, and Grand Theft Auto IV is $7.50, just for a few examples. Check it out before it ends!

Cheap music and donations

I have added a donations box to the right on the main screen — if you feel like you are getting good value from this and want to support the blog, feel free to give a donation. No pressure. :-)

Today’s deal of note is on Amazon — if you buy a CD/MP3 album for $8 or more, you get a $5 album for free. With over 800 albums currently available at $5, it’s a great way to save on music.

turbotax and starbucks

So I use Turbotax Online to do my taxes. I don’t know who else does, but I thought I’d post a couple of discounts. Chase offers its customers a 35% off on Turbotax Online, for federal taxes only. Fidelity offers its customers 25% off on both federal and state through Turbotax Online. I’m sure there will be other offers for this posted in the New Year — I’m not a member, but I’ve heard that last year Costco offered the best discount.

Secondly, if you are a Starbucks customer, Starbucks has started a new reward program. You can earn free drinks, free refills, etc., and it’s free to join. If you go to Starbucks on a regular basis, it definitely won’t hurt to join. (This replaces their previous Gold Card program of which I was a member, which you paid $25 for a regular 10% off – as I mentioned, the new program is free.)

grocery coupons, supercuts and cheap ass gamer

If you are a Cheerios eater, sign up on their website for 4 $1 off coupons and a chance to win a free box of cereal.

If you get your hair cut at Supercuts, sign up for their reminder service and get an instant $2 coupon off a haircut emailed to you, plus a $1 coupon every time they send you a reminder email.

I am just getting into using grocery coupons more and more. If you don’t, say, subscribe to the local paper, the best way I’ve found to get coupons other than the mailed circulars and Valpax is via printable coupons on Internet sites — SmartSource, Coupons.com and Redplum update frequently, so if you remember to check, say, weekly, you can save some money.

And last, a site I just found recently is Cheap Ass Gamer, a place where they post video game deals. Check it out if you are so inclined.

smile.ly and bzzagent – product testing and social media

I found a cool new site this weekend called smile.ly. It’s a consumer product testing panel — wanting to get us to spread the word via social media. It’s free, and although it doesn’t pay per se, you get free products and some other rewards. I just signed up, and then signed up to test some sort of new gummi multivitamin. So I’ll let you know how it goes – and check it out for yourself!

Also along the same lines, but one that I’ve been a member of for a while and can vouch for is BzzAgent (send me an email address if you’d like a referral). I’ve done about 11 campaigns for them over the past several years, getting free products such as Diet Mountain Dew, probiotics, and even a Sonicare UV sanitizer. I’ve also earned MyPoints from surveys and such on their site.

Hope you had a great holiday weekend!

writing income

I have not used this personally, but I have read reasonably good things about working for Associated Content. One person I know who writes for them has gotten some lucrative work out of it. Worst case, at least you get a few bucks and some portfolio work out of it.

At any rate, they have a current deal where if you post five articles, you get a $5 bonus, and ten for a $10 bonus, as long as it’s done before December 31st. Since these don’t have to be exclusive, if you have some articles lying around and want to make a little extra cash, it couldn’t hurt.

Have a great holiday everyone! I’ll be back posting again on Monday.

free wifi on planes and more cheap games

So Steam is having a *huge* sale through early January. Their games are from 10-90% off! A LOT of great games are included in this – the Fallout games, Grand Theft Auto (IV is currently $7.50 there), and I highly recommend taking a look if you are a PC gamer at all. There are also some sales that are rotating – “sales of the day” type thing.

Also, as you might know, a bunch of airlines are launching Wi-Fi programs, and most of them have free access through the holidays. Use these free codes to get you access (each is good for one use per person):

Expiring 12/31/2009:
DELTATRYGOGO, AIRTRANTRYGOGO, AATRYGOGO

Expiring 1/7/2010:
2287548427snk, 2472564126dvu, 2285632980tlk

These codes will work with any airline that uses Gogo In-Flight, which includes Delta, Airtran, American Airlines, Virgin America, United and Air Canada. Of course, be sure that the aircraft you’re flying offers it, as it’s not available on every plane. (My personal experience was flying Delta recently, and it was available on two of the four flights I took – the larger planes rather than the East Coast connections.)

billshrink and retro game discounts

So, Billshrink is worth checking out. I can’t say I found it helpful for me specifically, but it touts to be able to lower your bills – Internet, cell phone, insurance, etc. – based on your profile (where you live, your usage, etc.). Another similar site is Lowermybills. Again, I’ve used both of these but neither particularly helped me, but if anyone has had a good experience with it, feel free to share!

Also of note: GOG.com (Good Old Gamers) is having a big holiday sale – 25 to 40% off all of their titles, which are already pretty inexpensive to begin with, as retro titles/old PC games (downloadable). Some great games there – worth a look! Also, Steam (a similar downloadable model, although they also have newer games) has a big holiday sale that’s worth looking out for, with deals typically between 10-90% off.

Hope you’re having a great holiday!

cheapest gas prices

So I found a cool website today that will save most of you money (and me). Gasbuddy.com allows you to enter in your zip code, and tells you what the cheapest gas prices are in your area. I believe there’s also some reward system there if you post gas prices in your area or participate in other ways, etc. but even just at the bare-bones level, this is a great idea!
